The Griffin House Wedding

The Griffin House Wedding / Hood River, Oregon

There are some wedding days in the Gorge that just stick with you. This Griffin House wedding in Hood River was one of them. Windy, expansive, a little wild, and completely beautiful in a way that didn’t need anything added to it.

M and N came down from Seattle with about 150 of their favorite people to celebrate. They’re both landscape architects, and from the beginning it made sense why they chose The Griffin House. They felt a pull toward the history of the home (once a dairy farm, later a fox farm, and even home to a Prohibition-era speakeasy rumored to have a secret tunnel carved into the cliff!), the way it sits above the river, and the openness of it all. This venue choice was very intentional.

The Setting

The Griffin House is one of those places that really speaks for itself. The ceremony overlooks the Columbia River Gorge, with cliffs and sky stretching out in every direction. It’s simple in the best way, and it gives people space to actually be present instead of feeling like everything needs to be styled or staged.

As a Portland Wedding Photographer, I’m in Hood River often, and this venue always stands out. The light, the views, the way the weather becomes part of the day. It never feels the same twice.

A Windy Gorge Day

The wind showed up early and stayed all day, which honestly just made everything better. Melissa’s veil didn’t sit still. Dresses moved constantly. Hair was doing its own thing. And instead of trying to control it, everyone just leaned in. There was a lot of laughing, a lot of holding onto each other, a lot of moments that felt unplanned and real.

Those are the things I’m always looking for as a documentary wedding photographer. Not perfection, just presence.

The Way the Day Felt

The day felt easy. People were relaxed, excited, and fully there.

Family photos were filled with big hugs and a little chaos in between frames. During cocktail hour, guests kept turning toward the view, taking it in like they hadn’t quite expected it to be that big. The reception felt warm and full, the kind where no one is in a rush to leave.

I photographed everything on both digital and film, which felt right for a day like this. The softness of film paired really well with the movement and the light coming off the Gorge. But more than anything, it was the in-between moments that made it all feel alive. The quick glances, the hands on shoulders, the quiet conversations happening just off to the side.

Why People Love a Griffin House Wedding

There’s a reason so many couples end up here when they’re planning a Hood River wedding.

The views are unreal, but it’s more than that. It’s the feeling of the place. It’s open, grounded, and a little bit unpredictable in a way that makes the day more memorable. You don’t have to do much. You just show up and let it be what it is.

Planning Your Own Griffin House Wedding

If you’re planning a Griffin House wedding and looking for a Portland Wedding Photographer or Hood River Wedding Photographer, the biggest thing I can say is to give yourself space in your timeline. Space to be with your people. Space to take in the view. Space for things to unfold naturally. And maybe space to let the wind die down between frames. :)
